95-A Judge Retention Critical to Establishing New Drug Court
02/20/2019- The retention of Menominee County’s 95-A District Court Judge could also mean the creation of a badly-needed program to address drug abuse. The County is working to establish a drug treatment court, which, like the one already in operation in Marinette County, would reduce the sentence of selected persons convicted on felony drug charges upon their successful completion of their mandated treatment program. Judge Mary Barglind serves the 41st Circuit Court which includes Menominee County. She says drug treatment courts exist in every other UP county and the need for this type of service locally is rapidly increasing.
The Menominee County Drug Court is in the early planning stages and Judge Barglind says it likely won’t even get off the ground if the District Court judgeship is eliminated at the end of March. Legislation to preserve that position is currently working its way through the Michigan House and Senate.
