BAMC COO Retires After 43 Years

It’s the end of an era at Bay Area Medical Center as Chief Operating Officer Bernie VanCourt heads into her final week on the job before retirement. VanCourt began working for the hospital as a nurse in the medical surgery unit 43 years ago and says she’s seen a dramatic change in healthcare in the past four decades.
VanCourt has seen her share of challenges and triumphs during her tenure. She says recruiting skilled and experienced staff to a rural area is a struggle she’s faced many times over and adds she’s most proud of establishing the hospital’s Advanced Life Support Ambulance Service and seeing the brand new hospital come to life. She says for 43 years she’s found her joy in providing care for patients, be it one or a hospital-full.
While VanCourt will be taking some time for herself to travel and be with her grandchildren, she’s not giving up her caregiver spirit. She says she plans to get a dog post-retirement- something her work schedule hasn’t allowed her to do for more than ten years.
