Broadband Project Taking Longer Than Anticipated
11/05/2018- There’s a hang-up in the effort to bring high-speed internet to rural Marinette County. Packerland Broadband was awarded a Wisconsin Public Service Commission grant earlier this year to deploy a TV white space system to ten locations throughout the county with poor or no existing broadband coverage. However, County Administrator John Lefebvre says Packerland switched manufacturers for the project and is now running several months behind their original schedule.
Lefebvre says the new manufacturer has seen success in meeting or surpassing the targeted internet speeds and Packerland has already launched a tower utilizing TV white space in the UP. Lefebvre says now that they have a viable product, Packerland is working to expand that service throughout the region, giving priority to Marinette County.
Packerland’s initial timeline estimated customers could being seeing new or better internet service by this past summer. Lefebvre says the company now anticipates the project will be complete in early spring.
