County Approves Zoning Amendment on Mining
New protections are in place against metallic mining activity in Marinette County. Tuesday, the county’s Board of Supervisors voted to approve an amendment to the county’s zoning code that lists non-ferrous metallic mining as a prohibited use. The Development Committee previously sought to enact a moratorium barring metallic mining in the county, but opted instead for the zoning code change under the guidance of County Administrator John Lefebvre and Corporation Counsel Gail Mattison who expressed concerns that a moratorium could be challenged as an overstep of county authority. The zoning code now includes language classifying metallic mining as a prohibited use expect as allowed by local agreement. The effort to establish mining regulations in the county came after the passage of Wisconsin Act 134 which strips many of the environmental protections against metallic mining.
