County Considers Pedestrian Issues on County T/Roosevelt Road

02/14/2019- Marinette County is now taking on a discussion the City of Marinette already broached: what to do about pedestrian traffic along County T/ Roosevelt Road near the Highway 41 intersection. Marinette Alderman and County Supervisor Rick Polzin brought the concern to the City’s Civic Affairs Committee last month and yesterday spoke on the topic at a County Traffic Safety Commission meeting. He says the absence of a sidewalk and a narrow shoulder make it a dangerous area for those traveling on foot or by bike.
Mike Panosh with the state’s Bureau of Transportation Safety says a deeper analysis of the area is needed, but suggested one option could be to put County T on a “road diet” from Cleveland Ave to Highway 41, reducing the four lanes to two and adding a bike and pedestrian path on either side.
One of the first steps is solving the problem is determining which portions of the road are controlled by the County and which fall under the jurisdiction of the City or the Wisconsin DOT. Marinette’s City Engineer Brian Miller has already been in contact with the DOT about this and DOT representatives are also expected to bring an update to the Traffic Safety Commission in the coming months.
