Crash Cuts Out Power to Thousands
10/12/2018- One person is in custody following an early-morning car crash Thursday that left thousands of residents in the dark. Menominee Police Officers responded to a call of a single-vehicle accident in the 1000 block of 18th Street around 6:15 AM. A driver had struck a utility pole there, but fled the scene. Officers say that person then allegedly broke into the nearby Wisconsin Public Service building and stole one of their vehicles, but also crashed that vehicle near the WPS property. He was found unconscious behind the wheel and transported to Bay Area Medical Center. The driver is now being lodged at the Menominee County Jail. The initial accident knocked out power to about 3100 WPS customers. Crews were able to reroute power around the downed pole and had power restored to most customers shortly after 7:00 AM. A new pole was installed and the remaining impacted residents had their power back on by 10:20 AM. The incident remains under investigation.
