DHS Recommends 20 PPT PFAS Enforcement Standard

06/24/2019- A recommendation from Wisconsin’s Department of Health Services would create restrictive new groundwater standards for the Badger state when it comes to PFAS and 26 other potentially dangerous substances. The agency announced Friday their recommended enforcement standard of 20 parts per trillion for PFAS. That’s almost 70% lower than the federal advisory level the state currently relies upon when gauging contamination severity and possible health risks. The DHS and Wisconsin DNR have been working collaboratively to develop these new standards and there will be a period for public input on the proposals in the coming months. If adopted, the new PFAS guidelines could affect the number of private wells and other groundwater sites throughout Marinette and the Town of Peshtigo that will require treatment and remediation efforts due to PFAS contamination from the firefighting foam produced and tested locally by Tyco.
