DNR Warns of Wildfire Potential
With the rise in temperature also comes an increase in the potential for wildfires. DNR officials in both Wisconsin and Michigan have recently issued burn restrictions for Northeast Wisconsin and the UP. Derrick McGee, Forester/Ranger with the Wisconsin DNR, says the warm, sunny days and high winds quickly dry out dead plant debris, making it the perfect fuel for wildfires.
McGee says two-thirds of annual wildfires occur this time of year. And, he adds, while there’s nothing wrong with burning debris, it is a regulated activity and permits are required.
McGee says wildfire danger levels usually drop off after Memorial Day. A burning restriction map is available on the Wisconsin DNR website, or residents can call 1-888-WIS-BURN.
