Earth Day Brings Attention to Tobacco Litter

CigaretteButt.jpg

04/19/2019- You may not think you’re doing much harm when you toss that cigarette butt out the window or drop it on the sidewalk, but representatives with Public Health Delta and Menominee Counties say think again. With Earth Day just around the corner, the agency is hoping to call attention to the harmful effects tobacco litter has both on the environment and public health. Cigarette butts, which are no biodegradable, are the most commonly discarded waste worldwide. In fact, they make up about 38% of all collected litter. It’s not only unsightly, but potentially harmful for both children and wildlife when ingested. PHDM says it is their hope this Earth day will help to call attention to the impact of tobacco litter on the community and raise awareness about the need for more tobacco-free outdoor areas.
