Fraud Schemes Reported Locally
09/17/2018- The Marinette County Sheriff’s Office is alerting residents about a pair of fraud schemes targeting the area. The first is a phone call claiming to be an IRS representative who demands money and threatens arrest if the victim doesn’t comply. These callers ask for personal information including checking and savings accounts, credit card, driver’s license and social security numbers. Another scam targets older citizens with grandchildren. A caller claims to be the victim’s grandchild, usually providing the correct name, and tells the victim they are out of the country and need money wired to them. Anyone receiving these or other suspicious calls should hang up immediately. Additionally, because the elderly are more likely to fall victim to these types of scams, families are encouraged to speak with their loved ones about the importance of protecting their money and identity.
