07/30/2018- The Representative for Michigan’s 108th District is working to increase security in schools across the state. Representative Beau LaFave spoke to the Menominee County Board of Commissioners last week about a bill he’s introduced that would create new criminal charges that could be levied against those who make threats toward a school district. LaFave says currently, there are only two charge options in Michigan: a 90-day misdemeanor or a 20-year terrorism felony.
LaFave also suggested schools step up their physical security features with the addition of armed security guards and even metal detectors, if the district felt it was necessary.
LaFave says the state needs to up the resources it provides to schools to enhance security measures. LaFave’s Bill 5942 to criminalize making threats against a school was passed in the House last month and now moves on to the State Senate.
