LaFave, McBroom Seek to Halt Elimination of 95-A Judge
02/18/2019- A Menominee County judgeship position that’s on the chopping block could be saved by legislation recently introduced in the Michigan House and Senate. The bills, sponsored by Senator Ed McBroom and Representative Beau LaFave would reverse the 2012 decision to eliminate the 95-A District Court Judgeship locally by March 31st. McBroom says the decision to cut the position was made based on data an statistical analysis from 2008 through 2010, but notes there has been a measurable increase in the number of felony filings in the county since then, warranting the retention of that judge. The Menominee County Board has already passed a resolution supporting these bills. The Senate Judiciary and Public Safety Committee held a hearing on the proposal last week, while the House Judiciary Committee has yet to take up the legislation.
