LaFave Unveils New School Safety Measures

09/07/2018- The Representative for Michigan’s 108th District has introduced a plan to bolster the consequences for those convicted of planning or carrying out a violent threat against a school or its employees. Under the proposal unveiled by Representative Beau LaFave earlier this week, Michigan courts would not be able to clear a criminal record where a felon was convicted of violence on school grounds. LaFave says in some cases, those who may have originally faced lengthy prison time for threatening a school have had their charges and sentences reduced to just 90 days for disturbing the peace or the charges were dropped completely. This latest round of school safety measures comes on the heels of LaFave’s House Bill 5942 which gives prosecutors additional options when charging people for school violence.
