Lefebvre Talks Mine Moratorium with County Board
Metallic mining: it’s a hot-button issue throughout Wisconsin and locally as the Marinette County Board examines what they can do to regulate these operations. County Administrator John Lefebvre spoke Tuesday about the moratorium approved by the Land Information Committee that would place an 18-month suspension on the permitting or development of sulfide mines in Marinette County.
Lefebvre says Wisconsin Act 134, which goes into effect in July, strips some important environmental protections against sulfide mining.
Before the moratorium can be considered by the full county board, a public hearing must first be held on the issue. That is expected to happen at the May 8th Development Committee meeting.
