10/05/2018- While there’s only a river’s distance between Marinette and Menominee Counties, the rate of drug overdose deaths between the two is much more noticeable. A new online tool launched by the USDA allows users to analyze substance abuse data against socioeconomic, census, and other public information. The feature shows Marinette County has an average of 14.8 overdose deaths per 100-thousand residents, lower than the Wisconsin state average of 22.4 overdose deaths per 100-thousand. However, Menominee County averages 36.8 overdose deaths per 100-thousand and is well above the Michigan average of 26.9. In fact, Menominee County has the highest overdose rate of all the counties reported in the UP. Officials are hopeful this new online tool could help researchers and policymakers determine how to most effectively address drug abuse epidemics at the local level.
