Menominee County Opposes Casperson Bill
10/11/2018- Menominee County joins others in the UP opposing proposed legislation that would ease seasonal weight restrictions on logging trucks. Senate Bill 396 introduced by Senator Tom Casperson would allow log trucks to operate on unpaved county roads regardless of spring weight limits if the operator secures a $2000 per mile bond to pay for potential damage. Tuesday night, the Menominee County Board of Commissioners followed a recommendation from the county’s Road Commission to pass a resolution formally opposing the bill. Commissioner Bernie Lang says the bill would only open the door for other heavy equipment use on the roadway during the annual thaw.
Marquette, Baraga, Chippewa, and Delta Counties have each passed similar resolutions opposing Senate Bill 396.
