Navy Awards Coveted New FFG(X) Contract to Fincantieri

05/01/2020- It’s the news many in the community, but especially those at the local shipyard have been waiting to hear. The U.S. Navy has officially announced Fincantieri Marinette Marine has been awarded a contract to build the Navy’s new frigate. Under that contract, the shipyard will build a class of up to 10 multi-mission guided-missile frigates for the Navy’s FFG(X) program for a total of more than $5.5 billion. Those who have been advocating for the project to be carried out in Marinette are calling this a massive win for the local economy, as the contract is expected to create thousands of direct and indirect jobs. Fincantieri beat out four other competitors for the work, basing their design on the FREMM multi-mission frigate. Construction of these ships is expected to begin by April of 2022, with the first vessel to be delivered to the Navy by April of 2026.
