New PFAS Measure Goes to Public Hearing in front of Assembly Committee

09/05/2019- A bill introduced by Representative John Nygren and other legislators designed to help limit the release of PFAS compounds into the environment came up for public hearing before the Assembly’s Committee on Environment this week. Assembly Bill 323 would restrict the use of foams containing PFAS, like those manufactured and tested locally, to emergency firefighting and to testing only under pre-approved conditions established by the Wisconsin DNR. Some proponents of the measure say they also want the state to investigate other sources of PFAS including certain fabrics and paints, as well as Teflon. Tuesday’s public hearing came just days after Governor Tony Evers directed the DNR to move forward with rule-making efforts to create enforcement standards for safe surface, ground, and drinking water as they relate to PFAS.
