Operation Dry Water Begins this Weekend
You can expect an increased law enforcement presence on the water this weekend. It’s all part of a multi-agency, multi-jurisdiction effort called Operation Dry Water. Wisconsin DNR Recreation Warden Darren Kuhn says officials are seeking to educate more people about the dangers of boating while under the influence of drugs and alcohol and will be cracking down on those who choose to put themselves and others at risk. He says while the legal blood alcohol content for boaters is 0.08 like it is for drivers, many people experience the effects of alcohol much differently on water than they might on land.
When boaters operate under the influence, accidents are much more likely and are deadlier for passengers and operators, many of whom capsize their vessel or fall overboard. Kuhn says the risk of an accident can also carry onto land when boaters attempt to make their way home after too many drinks on the water.
If you do plan to drink while boating, assign a designated operator just like you would a designated driver. Operation Dry Water runs from June 29th through July 1st.
