Peshtigo Receives Grant for Fish Viewing Platform
The public could have the chance to get up close and personal with lake sturgeon and other fish in the Peshtigo River by next year as efforts to build a fish viewing platform in Peshtigo heat up. The city’s Parks and Recreation Director, Dave Zahn, says he’s received word Peshtigo is set to receive a $100-thousand grant from Wisconsin Coastal Management for the construction of a 160-foot platform that would extend out over the Peshtigo River. Zahn says the platform would make use of concrete pillars already in the water that previously supported a causeway for steam pipes spanning the river between BPM and a pulp mill.
Peshtigo has already received a $285-thousand Knowles-Nelson Stewardship grant from the Wisconsin DNR for the project, but Zahn says that still leaves them a little short of their goal.
If the city is able to meet the funding needs for the project, Zahn is hopeful work on the fish viewing platform can begin mid-summer and will be complete by the end of 2018.
