PFAS: No Impact Yet to City Water

11/08/2018- Marinette residents can rest-assured their drinking water thus far hasn’t been impacted by PFAS contamination the way it has been in neighboring communities. The Wisconsin DNR gave an update to the Common Council about the local contamination issue Wednesday. Kyle Burton with the Department’s Drinking and Groundwater Bureau says the city’s drinking water was screened for PFAS about a year ago and the results were well-below the EPAs health advisory level of 70 parts per trillion.
However, there is some concern about the concentration of PFAS compounds in Marinette’s wastewater biosolids. Adrian Stocks is a DNR Wastewater Field Operations Director. He says the city has been asked to temporarily store this material while the DNR and the EPA work together to establish regulations for land-spreading in contamination situations.
The DNR was first alerted about the contamination at Tyco’s Fire Technology Center and beyond in 2016. While the compounds don’t degrade, the DNR says municipalities across the country and the globe are facing similar contamination issues and the development of advanced remedial technologies is ongoing.
