Red Cross Offers COVID-19 Antibody Testing
06/16/2020- Lots of people are wondering if they might have had an undiagnosed case of COVID-19 and now there’s a new way to find out- by giving blood. Beginning this week, the American Red Cross is testing all blood, platelet and plasma donations for COVID-19 antibodies, providing donors insight into whether they have been exposed to this coronavirus. While a positive antibody test result does not confirm infection or immunity, the test will indicate if the donor’s immune system has produced antibodies to this coronavirus, regardless of whether they developed symptoms. Red Cross officials are hoping this new offer will encourage more people to give blood, especially now, as there continues to be an urgent need for blood and platelet donations as hospitals resumes surgeries and treatments requiring blood products. However, to protect the health and safety of Red Cross staff and donors, individuals who do not feel well or who believe they may currently be ill with COVID-19 should postpone their donation.
