Sheriff’s Department in Favor of Staffing Changes

03/14/2019- A staffing recommendation that the Menominee County Sheriff’s Department has been pushing for for years in starting to gain some traction. The County’s Personnel Committee heard a proposal to eliminate three current part time positions in the jail and replace them with two full time roles. The Sheriff’s Department is on track to spend about $150000 in overtime in 2019 because of their chronic struggle to recruit and retain part time workers. Undersheriff Mike Holmes says by creating full time positions that are more likely to be filled, they’ll cut down on that wasteful spending and increase employee productivity and safety.
Factoring in both salaries and benefits, replacing the three part time slots with two full time positions would create a budget deficit of about $87000 but Holmes says he’s confident that will be covered by the reduction in overtime costs. The proposal was sent along to the full county board for consideration and final approval.
