Vannieuwenhoven Ordered to Stand Trial
06/20/2019- The suspect in a 1976 double murder in Marinette County is bound over for trial. A preliminary hearing was held Wednesday for 82-year-old Raymand Vannieuwenshoven of Lakewood who’s been charged in connection with the shooting deaths of David Schuldes and Ellen Matheys in McClintock Park more than four decades ago. The state claims DNA recovered from Matheys’ clothing suggests Vannieuwenhoven also sexually assaulted her. A sexual assault charge against Vannieuwenhoven in the matter was dropped because of statute of limitations, but Marinette County District Attorney DeShea Morrow says the alleged attack still shows the defendant had a motive for the murders.
Vannieuwenhoven’s lawyer, Attorney Lee Schuchart, says there’s little other evidence placing the defendant at the scene and the DNA only proves Vannieuwenhoven had contact with Matheys at some point, but that doesn’t implicate him in the couple’s deaths.
Judge Jim Morrison ruled in the state’s favor saying there was enough probable cause to suggest Vannieuwenhoven may have killed Matheys and Schuldes. Vannieuwenhoven is due back in court for his arraignment July 1st.
