Menominee & Delta County Waterways See New Lake Sturgeon Stock
10/21/2019- This summer and fall, the Michigan DNR and several partners released nearly 20,000 juvenile lake sturgeon in public waters, part of an ongoing effort to rehabilitate this culturally significant fish species. Included on the list of release locations are waterways in Delta and Menominee Counties. On August 22nd, 230 sturgeon were placed into the Whitefish River, while 182 were released by the DNR into the Cedar River August 23rd. To allow for future evaluations, most of these fish were tagged before being released into the wild. The lake sturgeon is on Michigan’s threatened species list and officials with the DNR say these annual stocking efforts are critical to restoring the state’s lake sturgeon population.
