Grant money will help fund further development of the Menekaunee Harbor. Last week, Marinette City Engineer Brian Miller updated the common council on the status of a pair of Wisconsin DNR grants his department had applied for. The first is an outdoor recreation grant that would fund up to fifty-percent of a plan to construct a pavilion at the Menekaunee Park Boating Plaza. The second is a boating infrastructure grant that allows the installation of transient docks at the harbor for boats longer than 26 feet. Miller says both grants were awarded to the city. Miller sought bids for the projects last month, including an alternate bid for a second pavilion and landscaping work on the harbor’s South side. However, Alderperson Ken Keller says he wants to see other groundwork incorporated in the South Harbor and is not in favor of a pavilion in that area. The council approved accepting the base bid from Barley Construction at a cost of around $344-thousand.
